Rewriting the Future One Book at a Time

Habitat Press publishes solution-focused stories that shape a better future

Habitat Press started out as an imprint that supported writers emerging from the Green Stories project.

Today, using creative fiction as a tool, Habitat Press publishes stories that continue to inspire, inform and entertain readers, whether you’re interested in eco-fiction or are looking for other compelling stories that raise awareness and lead by example.

When we started out publishing eco-fiction, we focused on practical possibilities backed by experts. Habitat Press continues to have strong connections with academics, researchers, writers, creatives and thinkers. This means we’re still amplifying significant ideas to reach the very people who can make a difference (yes, that’s you!).

The books Habitat Press publishes are available to buy and share with others—no matter where you are in the world.

If you are ready to be part of the story, here’s how to get involved.*

As a reader, you can make a difference by:

  • Writing and posting an honest review to help more people find our books. For examples, see https://habitatpress.com/best-reader-led-review-sites/
  • Recommending the book to people you know, passing on your copy after you’ve read it to a friend, or leaving for someone to find (e.g. phone box, holiday home, street library, etc.).
  • Suggesting a book as a book club read. Our books are perfect for discussions, and many have specific book club questions at the end.
  • Asking your library to stock it and to list it as a book club read.
  • Buying books that Habitat Press publishes direct from our website.
  • Sign up to be informed of new publications, book launch parties and any offers.

*If you’re a writer, we only accept submissions via specific initiatives such as the Green Stories writing competitions. Sign up to keep informed of upcoming opportunities and events like writing workshops, competitions, talks, and other activities and updates.

Meet the Habitat Press team

Denise Baden

Hi, I’m Denise Baden. I’m the Professor of Sustainable Practice at the University of Southampton. I set up the Green Stories project in 2018 to inspire writers to create positive visions of what a sustainable society might look like, and established Habitat Press to enable the high-quality work emerging from those writing competitions to find a wider audience.

I continue my research into sustainability, but I’m also an author, and now a publisher. My first novel Habitat Man was shortlisted for BBC Radio 4 adaption. In 2025, a successful Kickstarter campaign funded publication of my second novel Murder in the Climate Assembly.

As Habitat Press grows, and the Green Stories Project alongside it, I’m fortunate to have a team of supporters, mostly volunteers, who dedicate their time, skills and experience to keeping Habitat Press going—and thriving.

Hi, I’m Rananda Rich, also known as The Ink Rat. I’m a copywriter, editor and ghostwriter based in Sydney, Australia. I work with Denise behind the scenes alongside other writers and volunteers to bring new books to fruition through Habitat Press and help support the related projects.

Drawing on a 25-year corporate career spanning finance, tech, health and wellness, I am passionate about leveraging the power of persuasive storytelling to drive meaningful change and achieve successful outcomes.

Habitat Press aims to turn fiction into a force for good

Books about climate change and environmental crises tend to be set in dystopian worlds. They leap into apocalyptic futures and imagine terrifying survival scenarios set in flooded or nuclear-blasted landscapes. But such stories don’t grapple with the realities of today’s world. More importantly, they don’t acknowledge the possibility of transformation.

At Habitat Press, we believe in igniting change. And so, in all our books, Habitat Press actively encourages constructive action, reasoned debate and creative exploration of real, practical solutions for a sustainable world…

…which is where you come in.

For Habitat Press’s sole purpose is to provide you with books about practical climate solutions and a sustainable way of life on our one and only planet. We do that in several ways.

Encouraging a wide range of readers

Our primary purpose is to make sure we’re giving you compelling stories that are entertaining in their own right! You certainly don’t need to be a card-carrying greenie to enjoy our books (but you can be if you want!). Our eco-fiction is not about preaching (to the converted or otherwise)—or about dumping overwhelming amounts of information on everybody—but about proper, page-turning tales.

Bringing stories to life

Stories are a great way to capture people’s hearts and minds, but what is the point of it all if the reader finishes the book and nothing changes? Here at Habitat Press, we translate storytelling into real-world impact, using fiction to drive meaningful change. For instance, research shows that the eco-themed, rom-com Habitat Man changes attitudes and helps readers adopt green alternatives, while No More Fairy Tales provides helpful links to useful solutions.

‘These tremendous and inspirational stories paint far better pictures of what we need to do to save Planet Earth than any number of facts, figures and graphs.’

Bill McGuire, Author, about No More Fairy Tales

Partnering with others

We team up with climate experts and collaborate with organisations like albert (through BAFTA) on projects that cover themes of climate change, biodiversity and solutions to the climate crisis. We help established writers integrate green solutions into mainstream fiction so that ideas and possibilities about climate solutions reach a wider audience.

Publishing and promoting strong eco-fiction

When you become part of the Habitat Press community, you help people find their way towards climate solutions and other sustainable, social and community outcomes.
